Filipino Kali is a distinct martial arts system originating from the Philippines, first formalized in 1897. Unlike sport-based styles, Kali is a combat-oriented discipline designed for real-world self-defense and battlefield efficiency. It emphasizes the use of edged weapons, blunt impact tools, and improvised objects, making it a preferred combat system for elite military and law enforcement units globally.
Kali incorporates techniques for all combat ranges but places strong focus on close-quarters engagement—particularly lethal strikes delivered from a tight, coiled stance. This allows practitioners to evade attacks while generating explosive power in limited space.
The art of Kali is based on aggressive counter-attacking strategies that prioritize offense and disruption of the opponent. It is not built around passive defense, but rather the concept of “quartering” the opponent—systematically breaking down and neutralizing threats from all distances, angles, and types of attacks.
